More and more people use mobile devices to access the World Wide Web, so the need for mobile-friendly websites is steadily growing. To meet this demand, the entity that operates the generic top-level extensions, ICANN, launched the dot MOBI domain name extension in 2005. The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the intention behind this extension is that all websites that use it need to comply with specific restrictions. In other words, all dot MOBI websites are required to be built to be viewed properly by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” drawn by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in cooperation with the .MOBI Registry. These incorporate how a page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The restrictions have raised some worries due to the fact that the top-level extension is the only one that specifies what devices has to be able to access a website and the way in which this should happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a site should be designed in such a way as to be viewed by most web browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.

Taking into account that the .MOBI Registry organization does not sell domains directly, you can order a dot MOBI domain with any 3rd-party firm, such as ours. If you have an already active domain, you can also transfer it to our firm if you acquire its EPP transfer authorization key from your current registrar firm.
